Japan to Launch My Number Card Functions on iPhone—A Step Toward a More Seamless Digital Society
On June 6, Japan’s Digital Minister Masaaki Taira announced some exciting news: starting June 24, iPhone users will be able to use key My Number card features directly on their phones. This means no more carrying the physical card to do things like getting official documents or checking government services online.
Until now, only Android phones had this function. But with iPhones joining in, many more people will be able to access the government’s “Mynaportal” website using just Face ID or Touch ID. You can also pick up official certificates—like copies of your residence or family register—at convenience stores, all from your phone.
On iPhone, users will be able to see their basic info from the card (like name and date of birth) and install a digital certificate to prove their identity online. This is all part of Japan’s bigger plan to make public services easier to use and more mobile-friendly.
By the end of May, about 98 million My Number cards had already been issued. Now, the government wants to make them even more useful by linking features like health insurance to your smartphone, too.
Why This Matters
This update isn’t just a tech improvement—it’s a big shift toward making everyday life in Japan more convenient. No more waiting in line at the city office or worrying about forgetting your My Number card. Everything can be done with just your phone.
For those of us interested in digital tools for community building—like Local DAOs or digital villagers—this kind of change is very promising. It creates a solid base for more local, self-managed services that are secure, efficient, and accessible.
What’s Next
As Japan’s digital systems get better, we’ll be watching closely. We’re especially curious about how this tech could help smaller towns and rural areas, where access to services can be harder. There’s also a lot of potential to connect this with Web3 and other new technologies in the future.
We’ll keep exploring these topics in future newsletters—so stay tuned!
