Bringing Web3 to Everyday Life — MyNumber Wallet Raises ¥200 Million to Build the Future of Digital Identity
A major step toward making Web3 more practical and accessible has just been taken in Japan. MyNumber Wallet Inc. has raised ¥200 million (about $1.3 million USD) to develop a new kind of digital wallet—one that connects your national ID card (the “My Number” card) with easy-to-use blockchain features like NFTs and local digital currencies.
The project received investment from gmjp Holdings and the Coincheck Group, both known for supporting innovation in the Web3 space. Their backing reflects growing excitement about the idea of combining public services and decentralized technologies. As investor Masafumi Kawanishi put it, “Bringing together the My Number system and Web3 opens up a whole new world.”
What is MyNumber Wallet?
MyNumber Wallet is an application that lets users verify their identity using their existing My Number card, Japan’s official national ID. Once verified, users can do things like send or receive NFTs (digital collectibles or certificates), use community currencies, and take part in online community projects—all without needing to carry a physical ID.
It’s designed to make the Web3 world less confusing and more approachable. Instead of dealing with private keys, crypto wallets, or complicated apps, people can access trusted digital services just by using their phone and ID.
Already tested in real communities
This isn’t just an idea on paper. The app has already been tested in Yamakoshi. Residents there used MyNumber Wallet to get event NFTs and try out new ways of interacting with local programs. It proved that the technology works—and that people are willing to use it when it makes their lives easier.
Why does it matter?
In many rural areas of Japan, where public services are shrinking and populations are aging, new tools like MyNumber Wallet could help communities stay connected and independent. Instead of relying only on local governments, residents could use digital tools to organize, share resources, and keep their towns running.
MyNumber Wallet could also make it easier for regional projects like Local DAO to grow and reach more people. With plans to open up development tools (like SDKs and APIs) to outside partners, this wallet could become the go-to platform for Web3 in local Japan.
Big potential
At a time when Web3 still feels out of reach for many people, MyNumber Wallet offers a way in. It doesn’t ask users to be tech experts or crypto investors—it just gives them simple, secure tools they can actually use. And by connecting those tools to something as familiar as a national ID, it builds a bridge between traditional systems and the digital future.
The success of this project could be a turning point—not just for Web3 in Japan, but for how we think about local innovation, civic tech, and community resilience in the digital age.
